2:33 pm - Merry Christmas and all that jazz...
Hi everybody!

I can't believe how long it's been since I posted an entry here.  I thought I'd drop a little line to let you know that I'm still alive and kicking...sort of.  Actually, I'm getting over the major allergic reaction I had to the absolutely gorgeous pine wreath my friend gave me for my front door.  I thought it'd be safe since, technically, it hangs outside.  I guess not, though, since I've had sniffles, sneezing and itching since the day I got it.  All I can figure is that it wafts into the house every time we open the front door.  Bummer.

So hubby hung it on the outside wall of the house next to the door.  So far, so good.  I feel better today, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that that will be a good solution.  Damn, I hate allergies.

On a much happier note, my baby is home for the holidays!!  She got home late Sunday night and will be here for three weeks.  She's been busy catching up on her sleep and visiting with friends, and we're just enjoying having her here.

I know I haven't been in contact with anybody for a while.  I haven't chatted with anybody in ages and I really miss you guys.  It's just that I've been very busy keeping Hubby company.  It seems he was feeling pretty neglected from my on-line chatting, which was affecting our relationship, so I started cutting back until I rarely do it at all anymore.

So anyway, I just wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.  May you all be very blessed for the holidays and the year to come,

Love to you all,
~Sal

Okay, I'm still playing with my new toy.  Check it out...here is a bluebird that visited the feeder today, and the kidling got a great shot of the woodpecker.  :)

2:19 pm - Keyboard update
I am happy to announce that I now have a new keyboard!  YAY!

And I got if off of eBay for $12.95!  Double YAY!

Hubby installed it for me last night and for being used, it works just fine.  The only problem I've encountered is the H key sticking a little.  That, I can live with...especially since a new keyboard would have run around $40-50!  Yup...the H key is well worth the difference -- And I can type again!!  Triple YAY!!

5:11 pm - Cough, Sniffle, Sneeze
Hubby & kiddo have both had colds all week.  Coughing, sore throat, runny nose, the works.

Yesterday my throat was scratchy.  Today I woke up and can't talk.  Great.

Can I kill hubby & kiddo now?

1:20 pm - Of Chamomile tea and keyboards
A couple of weeks ago, I had the misfortune of spilling a cup of tea on my laptop.  Yup...not a good move.  I cleaned it up, and even got hubby to take the keyboard out of it and clean all the sugary gunk out of it.  But, keys sticking was just the beginning.  Soon, it became apparent that the tea had gotten up under the touchpad.  Great.

It behaves for the first few minutes I have it on, but as it warms up, it starts acting as if I am right clicking the mouse - all the freakin' time! The drop-downs are driving me crazy!  Just reading a page can be aggravating enough, but to try to type anything is infuriating.

So, if anyone wonders why I haven't been writing or responding to other posts much lately, that is why.  Hubby has already taken my whole laptop apart and cleaned every circuit and connection he could find, but it's still acting up.  He's going to take it to one of his friends who owns a computer repair business this weekend, so maaaaybe it will be fixed then.  Keep your fingers crossed for me.

4:58 pm - Red Red Robin Keep Bob Bob Bobbin' Along!
Holy flock!!  The robins have arrived!  Along with a lot more birds that I can't identify.  :-D

We have a bird feeder out in our front yard and there have been flocks of robins, finches, and black birds with a yellow stripe on the wing (anybody know what it is?)  I've also seen cardinals, titmice (titmouses?), doves, chickadees and sparrows...and even a pair of woodpeckers up on the tree trunk.  :o)

If my camera had a better zoom on it, I'd post pics.  Unfortunately, it's overcast today so the lighting is crappy and I can't get them to show up very well.  Oh well...just imagine the schoolyard scene from "The Birds" and you'll have an idea of what my yard has been like today.  :-D

5:13 pm - I'm Bored
Bored, bored, bored.

It isn't that I have nothing to do.  I've got lots to do... I just don't want to do them.

I could start taking down the tree, but I'd have to get hubby to get the boxes down, and he's already had to fix a leaky pipe under the bathroom sink today.  I don't want to bother him.

I could pay some bills, but I need to balance the checkbook first.

I could balance the checkbook, but that would involve... math!  *shudders*

I could write something, other than this I mean, but I haven't got the slightest idea of what to write.

So, i'm reduced to watching a PBS program about Ed Sullivan.

Have I mentioned how bored I am?

2:11 pm - Behold! The Mullet!

Okay...I finally got the new do tamed into something I like.  And whether I like it or not, it's definitely a mullet.   A big, 80's girl-style mullet.   All I asked for was for her to "give it some shape and get it out of my face."

Good God.

This first picture shows how it looked last night... it's poofy!!  Arrrggghhhh!!!!  I hate poofy hair.  With it short on top, it adds a good 2 inches to the top of my head!  Then, since the back is still fairly long (shoulder length now), and poofy on it's own, the whole effect is a triangle!  I look like a freakin' poodle!!  Double Arrrrgggghhhhh!!!

The second picture is today, after I washed it out and put enough goo on it to tame the poof.  This I can live with.  :o)

Mind you, I have no make-up on in either picture.  :P

12:30 pm - Hair yesterday...gone today
So,after a year and a half of letting it grow, I finally got tired of kissing Hubby through a veil of hair, and trying vainly to tame the fluffy stuff, so today I got it cut.  l still have some length in the back, but the front is short now. I like it, but it looks a LOT like it did in the 80s.  In fact, when I got home, my daughter said, "Mom, you've got a mullet again."  Okay, crap...I didn't want a mullet, but it does look a lot better than it did.  Maybe after I wash it out and style it myself, it won't look quite so much like I'm ready for flashy dresses with huge shoulder pads.

Anyway, I'll post some pics later if anyone wants to see.  :)

1:52 am - An eventful weekend...
We said goodbye to Yvonne this past weekend...and I finally feel a bit of closure.  Her family came down to clean out her house and put it up for sale, and hosted a very nice memorial service for her, with a luncheon afterward.  Several of us spoke, and I don't think there was a dry eye in the place, especially after "The Dash" was read:  http://www.lindaslyrics.com/thedashpoem.html

I think it was good for her family, especially her mom, to see that she had people here who loved, and cared  for her.  They always worried about her being down here "all alone."

The good news is that we've gotten permission to put a memorial bench in a small park that overlooks Port Royal Sound.  Anyone visiting it can watch the dolphins swimming by, or feeding in the shallows.  The friend who has been handling the arrangements for this is a mortician (and the least likely person you'd ever imagine to be a mortician, but that's another story), and has the contacts to have a nice stone bench inscribed with her name and an etching of a dolphin.  It will be nice to have a tangible place to go and "visit" with her.  When it's finally done, I'll post a photo of it, if anyone is interested.

Meanwhile, since her house had to be cleaned out quickly, Hubby & I have inherited most of her household.  Everything from her canning and candy making supplies, bath linens, office supplies, holiday decorations, a huge collection of movie posters, tons and tons of crafting supplies (yay!  I'll be making jewelry again soon!) to her king-sized bed--including a set of gazillion thread-count sheets!  I swear, with so many of her things surrounding me, I don't feel like she's gone at all.  It's very comforting.

Yvonne and her dog...together again.

9:09 am - This meme brought to you by the letter "K"
Comment and I'll give you a letter.  Then  you make a list of things you love starting with that letter.  [info]blade_girl gave me the letter "K" so here's my list... :)  [for some reason I can't get this to stay one line]

1. Krispy Kreme donuts - need I say more?

2. Kasey Kahne - possibly the cutest NASCAR rookie ever. And a darned good driver at that. :)

3. K'immies - any good Highlander fan knows that the best baddies were the immortals who's names began with "K"

4. Kris Kringle - who couldn't love a jolly fat guy dressed in red who brings presents to all the good little boys and girls at Christmas.

5. Kisses - from little pecks to big, sloppy wet ones...I love kisses.  (Chocolate ones are great too!)

6. Kaleidoscopes - One of my favorite toys as a child was a Kaleidoscope. It was like an ever-changing stained glass window.

7. Kids - the future of the world. Their curiosity, innocence, imagination, and resilience are truly inspiring.

8. Kitty cats - sleek, lithe, cuddly, independent, intelligent, beautiful, cool...I love cats.  :)

9. K9's - okay, maybe that's cheating, but I love dogs too.  They're loyal, intelligent (mostly), devoted, and love unconditionally.  Some of my best friends have been canines.  :)

10.  Knives - where would we be without the world's first tool?  From flint knives to katanas, knives, and swords by extension, are cool.

So, there's the 10 K things I love.  :o)

10:51 am - Happy Turkey Day!!
Just sitting here, drinking my coffee and watching Macy's Parade. Hubby's at the store getting a few last-minute items, like corn meal--I can't make my mom's corn bread dressing without that--and the daughter just crawled out of bed. Yeah, we're getting a late start, but we gave up on having holiday dinners before 4pm a looong time ago. Besides it's not like we're having a huge crowd for dinner, just our neighbor and her young son and our friend, Karen, and a late dinner works best for them too.

Our menu for the feast is turkey and dressing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, collard greens with ham, rolls, and for dessert we have apple pie, chocolate cream pie, pumpkin pie, and minced meat pie. Yeah, the daughter went a little crazy on the pie making this year, but I'm not complaining. ;)

So anyway, Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

6:12 pm - Tomorrow it will be two weeks...
...since my friend, Yvonne, passed away.

I know, technically, it will be two weeks on tuesday, but sitting by her bed in the hospital, waiting for a twitch of her eyelid, or fingers, or anything at all...a twitch that never came... we knew she was already gone. She was so still, in fact, that when I kissed her forehead, I was surprised that she was still warm...then I was surprised that I was surprised. I think that's the moment I knew she was no longer with us.

We weren't able to attend her funeral because her family had her brought home to Illinois. We are planning to have a memorial service for her when her sisters and mother can come down. It will probably be in a month or so.

In the meantime, however, I'd like to say a few things about her. For one, she was the best friend I've had in a very long time. We didn't always agree, and some of our quarrels were positively epic, but we always made up with each other...even when we just agreed to disagree. She was good that way. I knew I could be honest with her no matter what, and the friendship would be okay.

I could go on. I could tell you how much she loved the ocean, and how she watched the dolphins play in the surf every chance she got. I could tell you how much she loved to garden, and how she had looked forward to owning her home so she could plant flowers and watch them grow. I could also tell you how much fun she was, and how we loved to play Uno on Friday nights. I could tell you all that and more, but it would never be enough. Words alone will never be enough to tell you how wonderful she was, and how much she will be missed.

But, she would be the first to tell me to stop pining for her and to get on with life. So, I shall. At least, for now.

4:14 pm - Prayers desperately needed...
...for my best friend.

She called here a little while ago and asked my hubby to come down and help her move some furniture (she lives alone), and he agreed. But when he got there only a few minutes later, he found her unconscious, she had thrown up and was not breathing. Thank God his employer requires yearly CPR certification.

He called 911 and kept her going until the ambulance arrived. When I heard them and saw that they had stopped in front of house (she lives on the corner), my first thought was that one of them had had a heart attack. I raced down there with my chair at top speed to find out that it was her, and basically hubby had been keeping her alive.

He's gone to the ER with her wallet and ID, and to find out what he can about her condition, but when the ambulance left with her they said they were still breathing for her.

I'm sorry if this doesn't all make sense, but I'm pretty rattled right now.

And it's her birthday. She's only 51. Please say a prayer for her to be okay.

I swear, my dog is so lazy! A truck just drove by outside and like any good watchdog, he barked. What's so lazy about that, you ask? He's lying on the floor! That's right...just lying there, barking. He couldn't even be bothered to lift his head!!
